The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) has nominated a new president, Robert Cionni, an ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon from Salt Lake City. The new president of the ASCRS, which is an international educational organization focused on advancing quality and effectiveness in ophthalmic surgery and eye care, is an expert in cataract and refractive surgery, as well as Medical Director of The Eye Institute of Utah.
Cionni, who is among the most recognized professionals in the region, was officially inducted to the position at the 2015 ASCRS Symposium and Congress that took place on April 18th in San Diego. The ophthalmologist first joined the society during his initial year of practicing, in 1989, and has served as the vice president of the organization, which includes 9,000 members.
The new ASCRS president is specialized in performing laser cataract surgeries, as well as other complex cataract surgeries, implantable contact lenses, LASIK laser vision correction procedures and other refractive surgery techniques. According to a press release, Cionni underscored during the ceremony the importance of the organization throughout his career.
The society helped him improve knowledge on novel technologies to provide health care for the eyes, as well as on other techniques that supported the improvement of therapeutic outcomes among his patients. The research conducted by Cionni has been published in several journals, while he regularly presents his work at ophthalmic meetings worldwide.
Dr. Cionni will give the incoming President’s address at the commencement of the ASCRS’s meeting in San Diego on April 18th. He says the organization has been vital to the development of his career, and it has helped him learn about new eye care technologies and techniques that have contributed to improving results for his patients.
The ophthalmologist is also a board-certified Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. In addition, Cionni already performed duties as a reviewer at a series of journals focused on ophthalmology, such as the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
During the 2015 ASCRS Symposium and Congress, numerous discoveries and recent research findings were presented, including a series of physician presentations and other events from the San Diego-based company Imprimis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The company’s CEO, Mark L. Baum, hosted an informational speech on the company’s campaigns Go Dropless and LessDrops, while nine physicians shared their surgical experiences as current prescribers of Imprimis’ formulations.
